After High School I left Yuma and worked as a personal trainer, master trainer where i trained trainers and eventually as a fitness club manager. I moved back to Yuma to start my own Gyms and put my 10 years of fitness experience to use and provide Yuma with it's first full service 24/7 fitness facility with multiple locations. Over the past three years I have grown my gyms, Snap Fitness to three locations and more members than any other gym in town. Through this blog I can give back to those who might be struggling with their workouts or just wanting to learn more through education in all areas of fitness. Let’s get fit Yuma. In 1991, no state in America had an obesity rate anywhere close to 20% but within recent years not only has this percentage been reached but it has been vastly exceeded. According to new research on fitness and health, Arizona has the 29th highest rate of obesity in America with an astounding 25.8% of Arizona residents obese, roughly 1 in 4. Even more troubling is the data that states that Arizona youth have the 15th highest rate of obesity in America with obesity rates increasing from 12% in 2003 to over 20% in 2010. Although these statistics may come as a shock, simply looking around at your peers will quickly and visually verify these statements as our current society is dangerously obese, an issue no previous generation has ever had to face. If that is not close enough to home for you, maybe you remember the recent CDC study that found Yuma as the #2 fattest city in the US! Click here to read more…
Improving your VO2 max in your Yuma Fitness center.
Many people think they don’t have time to join their local Fitness Center, their excuse: I don’t have time, I don’t have the energy.
Well, many have not had a helpful guide from a personal trainer or a fitness instructor to show them how fun it could be. These professionals are trained to build up your exercise tolerance slowly to cater exercises for your own pace. Once you are in full routine of an exercise pattern, you will acquire the energy to work out and you could reduce the work out time to fit your busy schedule.
As a matter of fact a more intense and high rate oxygen consuming exercise or exhaustive workouts, could improve your health much more than a simple relaxing work out in the gym.
So you are ready for your short and intense workout?
I stumbled across a very interesting paper that might interest you, by Gary O’Donovan,” Changes in cardiorespiratory fitness and coronary heart disease risk factors following 24 weeks of moderate- or high-intensity exercise of equal energy cost”
This study showed how a high-intensity workout is more effective than a moderate-intensity workout of equal energy costs, in order to improve cardiorespiratory fitness. The data also suggested that changes in coronary heart disease risk factors are influenced by exercise intensity.
This study was performed on 64 men that had not exercised over the last two years, and they were randomly placed in two exercise groups. One was of high intensity and the other of moderate-intensity work out. This was measure using VO2 Max levels. Your VO2 max is a measure of the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use to produce energy.
The high-intensity workout group went through three 400-kcal workout sessions per week at a rate 80% of VO2 max and the other of moderate-intensity three 400-kcal workout sessions per week at 60% of VO2 max.
They were instructed to maintain their diets, and their heart rate was measured one month later. The results indicated that the VO2 max responded differently in the moderate- and high-intensity exercise groups. It was seen that the total cholesterol and fibrinogen concentrations changed favorably in both groups.
However in the high-intensity groups, a significant drop in these levels was seen in the high-intensity group. Speed workouts also improve your neuromuscular conditioning.
Here is a table of VO2max for various groups
So being busy does pay off.
A Yuma personal trainer at your local Yuma Fitness Center can help you create a workout plan that can improve your VO2 max levels.
Increasing your VO2 levels is obtained through interval training. The proper intensity of your intervals should be between 95-99% of your maximum heart rate
Below are 2 types of running workouts to help increase your VO2 max levels. All you need is to add one of the two workouts to your fitness session, possibly building it up to two sessions per week at the peak of your training plan.
These workouts are based on running exercises done on the treadmills in your Yuma gym.
The key to these running workouts is that you get sufficient rest in between.
Running Intervals: To maximize the benefit for these threshold intervals, try running longer intervals and run them at a brisk pace but not all out. Recovery is done by a walk or jog in between intervals of 2-3 minutes, and build up the number of repetitions through your training program.
Tempo runs: Tempo runs are a good way to get into increased VO2 levels. Start off by running a 1-2 mile warm-up and then increase your pace to your lactate threshold pace. Try to sustain this for at least 20 minutes. Conclude with a 1-2 mile cool-down jog.
These workouts can be very effective over the course of the speed-phase of your training but be careful not to do too much too soon, as this added stress can lead to injury if you decide to add this element to your routine in your Yuma Fitness Center, gradually increase the volume and intensity of your runs.
So visit your local Yuma Fitness Center. It is never too late to improve your VO2 levels. At Snap Fitness you can ask a certified personal trainer to create an intense workout.
